Hopper Dust Suppression

Dry Fog Dust Suppression for Hoppers and Unloading Areas

The unloading of bulk materials from wagons, trucks, and dumper trucks into receiving hoppers is one of the most intense and rapid dust-generating operations on any processing or handling site. The speed and volume of material flow, combined with the height of fall and the turbulence created on impact, generates large dust clouds almost instantaneously. The finer and drier the material, the greater the volume of airborne dust produced, with materials such as limestone, gypsum, cement, fly ash, potash, and fine aggregates presenting particular challenges due to their sensitivity to moisture and the fine particle size of the dust generated.

How It Works

Our dry fog dust suppression system is highly effective at suppressing and controlling the rapid uplift of airborne dust at hopper unloading points, even with materials that cannot accept significant moisture addition. By mounting dry fog or air atomising nozzles around the perimeter of the receiving hopper or unloading area, a blanket of ultra-fine fog is created that intercepts and captures dust particles as they become airborne, causing them to agglomerate and settle before they can escape into the surrounding environment.

The system is designed to react quickly to the sudden generation of dust during tipping and unloading, with nozzle coverage engineered to envelop the entire dust generation zone. Because moisture addition is less than 0.1%, even highly moisture-sensitive materials such as gypsum, limestone, and cement can be treated without any effect on product quality, handleability, or downstream processing.

Over time, the benefits of effective hopper dust suppression extend beyond health and safety compliance. A noticeable reduction in material wastage is realised as fines that would previously have been lost as fugitive dust are returned to the product stream. The condition of surrounding buildings, structures, and equipment also improves significantly, reducing cleaning and maintenance costs and extending the working life of plant and machinery in the vicinity of the unloading point.

Key Benefits for Hopper and Unloading Applications

  • Rapid dust suppression in response to high-volume, high-speed unloading
  • Suitable for moisture-sensitive materials including limestone, gypsum, cement and fly ash
  • Less than 0.1% moisture addition - no product degradation or handling issues
  • Reduces fugitive dust emissions and material wastage
  • Improves air quality and working conditions for plant operators and drivers
  • Protects surrounding buildings, structures, and equipment from dust accumulation
  • Automated operation linked to vehicle presence or tipping signals
